SA Global Games Athletes Celebration

On Thursday 3 October, South Australian athletes representing Australia at the upcoming 2019 INAS Global Games in Brisbane attended an event hosted by Inclusive Sport SA celebrating their selection in the national team. The event, held at Thebarton Community Centre, saw athletes, their friends; family and loved ones gather along with State Government, Inclusive Sport SA Board and staff representatives for the evening. With a record eighteen South Australian athletes heading to games and representing the country across seven sporting codes the night was a great opportunity to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and talent of the individuals chosen. Mr Matt Cowdrey OAM MP, Member for Colton, also presented the SA contingent in attendance with their Australian team uniforms for the event, the undoubted highlight of the evening for the athletes. “The Global Games is essential to the visibility of people with a disability and the importance sport has to all Australians, our way of life and National identity,” said Inclusive Sport SA General Manager, Katrina Ranford at the event, “and it is fantastic to see eighteen South Australians within this year’s Australian representatives.” “We hope the Games encourages more people with disability to get involved in sport and we see an increase in the rate of participation of people with a disability into valued roles in our community sport clubs and future high performance representation”. The INAS Global Games, which will run from the 12-19 October in 2019 is the largest sporting event for elite athletes with intellectual disability. As one of the last international sporting events before next year’s Paralympics, the competition at the games is sure to be intense as athletes from around the world look to qualify for Tokyo 2020. Inclusive Sport SA would like to wish our SA Australian representatives, and all those donning the green and gold, good luck in their chosen discipline/s and a successful games.
