Announcing the latest IDS Masterclass

Inclusive Sport SA is pleased to announce the next session in the Inclusion and Diversity in Sport (IDS) Masterclass series – Inclusion of Transgender and Gender Diverse People.

Scheduled for Thursday 3 October this four hour interactive workshop will be open to a limited number of sport and recreation personnel to work through the National Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport, launched in June by the Human Rights Commission and Sport Australia.

Delivered by LGBTI sport charity, Proud 2 Play (who were a major contributor in the development of the Guidelines), the session will take participants through the key points and provide a starting point for sports’ front line people to promote the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people within their sporting communities. Inclusive Sport SA CEO, John Cranwell said, “We are grateful to James and the Proud 2 Play team for their continuing advocacy and passion in this space and for making the trip to Adelaide to partner on this IDS Masterclass.”

A recent study by Flinders University commissioned by Inclusive Sport SA surveyed 150 athletes across 39 sports including football, rugby, soccer, swimming, tennis, cricket, softball and golf and found that many LGBTI athletes felt unsafe and feared being judged by their local sporting clubs. While the overall trend in attitude from sport club members towards open acceptance is changing for the better in principle, some respondents were hesitant that acceptance may affect their team or children. Interestingly, different sports vary in the level of acceptance of transgender and gender diverse people resulting in many LGBTI athletes anxious to join local clubs and face the challenging decision to disclose their gender identification or sexuality in fear of being ridiculed and excluded.

Office for Recreation Sport and Racing CEO, Kylie Taylor said, “With issues of gender and sexuality in sport featuring across our news headlines recently, this Inclusive Sport SA IDS Masterclass presents a timely opportunity for the sector to establish a starting point to address discrimination and promote inclusive and welcoming sporting clubs”.

With the National Guidelines offering guidance for inclusion in line with fundamental human rights-based principles, the Inclusion of Transgender and Gender Diverse People Masterclass will present an opportunity for the sector to create a practical roadmap for the promotion of their sport, (and in turn club cultures) as safe communities centred in respecting the rights and choices of all members.

“To have Proud 2 Play, who were instrumental in the development of the Guidelines, involved in the session is a fantastic opportunity for local sport administrators looking to develop this space within their organisations,” said John.
